Ride London 2014 rankings, results and finishing times: did you beat Chris Boardman?

We reckon by now the riders of this year’s Ride London-Surrey should just about have recovered from the effects of Hurricane Bertha on Sunday morning, so as a reward for completing the 86-mile course in truly epic conditions we’ve done all the necessary number crunching to create a definitive list of times and rankings.

You’ve probably got your time from the official results site and now (if you’re like us) you can’t help wondering – ‘how did I did I do compared to everyone else?’ Most importantly, did I beat Gary Kemp out of Spandau Ballet, or former TdF Yellow Jersey, Chris Boardman?

As usual for a ‘sportive’ event, the organisers aren’t that keen on releasing rider times in ‘ranked’ order (it’s not a race, after all) – instead you get an alphabetically-organised index. But we didn’t let that stop us – we just got our best data-crunchers on the case, and in the time it takes Mark Cavendish to sprint 500 metres (or fall off his bike), out popped a neatly formatted spreadsheet full of interesting insights.

Below are the headline facts and figures from the UK’s biggest ever sportive (some 20,000 riders on the day) – but don’t worry, we’ve also got all the raw data for you to pore over!

  1. top work and at speed too. Since you mentioned him, any idea which of the 2 Gary Kemps listed in results is the one-out-of-Spandau-Ballet? thanks, Tim

  2. Good spot – we didn’t realise there were two riders named Gary Kemp. Not sure which one is the singer, but let’s be charitable and assume it was rider no. 30616 as that would give him the best time (unless the real Gary Kemp informs us otherwise…)

  3. and my wife who came 47th noticed there were a few blokes in the burds cat, she said “43rd if you remove Nigel, Phil, Carl and Patrick from the women’s top 50!” :-)

  5. What a great service. I now know that i did much better than I expected.Any way of doing age categories…it would be nice for us old fogeys to compare?

    • Hi Fred, unfortunately we only have the data published on the official RideLondon site to work with and that doesn’t contain anything on competitor age. You may be able to request that sort of info from Ride London organisers directly. Perhaps there could even be a fastest fogey award!

      • Hi Tom
There is an AG column in the Riders Times which gives ages in 5 year segments. Could you not use those?

      • Hi guys, Thanks for taking an interest in the rankings! I’m really sorry but as Jeff says below it would take a lot of time for us to retrospectively include the age data (which was not included in the first upload of times published on the RideLondon site). We hope to do the same post again next year and to work more closely with the ride organisers to ensure we get the very best data. Thanks again for your interest!

  6. Hi Fred/Tom, the ages are there when you type in your names but that would be a huge task to collate.on strava I am 3rd Fastest over 65 year old Kingston to Kingston, but when I typed in the names of the 2 guys who beat me one was 35 and the 42! Incidentally my time was 4hours 1 min 26sec

  7. This is a great service. Thank you very much for posting it. Is there a chance of having the download available in spreadsheet format, as well as the PDF?

  8. Hi, If you match the race number to the race photo on the RideLondon website, you’ll see that Lucy Sutcliffe, Sarah Goldsmith, Justine Smeal and Nigel Money (surely the name is a give away!) are all male. I haven’t looked at the women’s times beyond Patricia Keegan (who actually came 2nd) because I am Patricia Keegan ;) but maybe something to look into before publishing the results. Cheers!

    • Hi Patricia, First of all well done on a fantastic time! Our results have proved even more popular than last year, but once again we’re limited to providing info using the data published on the RideLondon site. We can’t commit to refining all 20,000 entries to ensure they’re in the right class (as it would be a herculean effort) – we simply have to work with what they give us. Unfortunately, we think these errata are caused by a few bad apples trying to improve their chances in the ballot – cheeky buggers!

      • Tom, is there any chance of getting raw data rather than the rendered HTML? That’d make it easier to rig something up to embarrass these “bad apples” next time.

      • Hi Martin,

Not quite sure what you mean here but sounds interesting. Maybe drop me an email?
